Circa 1800, a rare set of 10 Scottish laburnum dining chairs, made up of 8 singles and 2 arm chairs. The chairs reflect a design from Sheratons cabinet maker upholstered drawing book published 1791 and 1802. The brander back chairs with a fine reeding on the both sides of the frame, each of the chairs have 3 stylish shaped upright splats again with a simple beading, they sit on curved rail. The back legs are square and slightly out swept, the front legs are square and taper down. All of the legs are united by various rectangular shaped stretchers. These chairs have stuff over seats upholstered in horsehair held in place by close brass studding. The 2 arm chairs which are slightly larger in scale to the singles have shaped arms which are fixed to the back and come out and finish with a simple curved front. These are held in place by 2 stout uprights which taper elegantly fit in beneath the arm.
Laburnum is one of the most dense and darkest in colour of the UK timbers. The green – olive colour evident on fresh exposure of the wood to planning and cutting gradually darkens to a deep chocolate brown, over a period of several years). Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
