South Sea pearls are cultured pearls, and the South Seas, as they are romantically called, is actually the coast off Australia. They come from a larger mollusc than traditional cultured or fresh-water pearls, and therefore can produce larger pearls-sometimes up to 20mm in diameter. Naturally , the finest and largest necklaces are very expensive indeed. Some of the molluscs are black-lipped, producing silvery-grey to black pearls, as these are, some gold-lipped, producting gold-colured pearls. This is an attractive necklace in wear, although the pearls have some markings and blemishes-hence the price, graduating 8-12 mm, with diamond rondels, and an 18kt and diamond bow clasp. The total length is approximately 20 inches: 51 cms.
