Circa 1870, unusual quill, ebony and mother of pearl inlaid box or letter rack. The box has a slightly raised top, formed in sections of quilling intersected by ebonised timber and Mother of Pearl. In the centre is a George III style, swan neck lifting handle and circular pommels all over back plates. The lid is hinged and inside there is an elaborate pattern with an elephant in the centre with Matara (a region in Sri Lanka) written underneath. All the flat surfaces are elaborately inlaid in ivory or bone. This box comes full of Victorian or Edwardian marbles. The main body of the frame has an open section, often used for letter racks so that the contents could be seen.
