A most attractive and endearing Pair of Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery "Comforter" Spaniels ~ H 2416 ~ H 2417. This pair, Size 1, the largest of six sizes normally to be found, with somewhat sparse decoration of black paws, gilt spots, gilt chain and padlock. N.B. :- The right hand spaniel has an old hairline running along the side of his head, clearly illustrated here in Image No. 6, together with a rubbed nose, as shown in Image No. 7. Such pairs of dogs, widely regarded as "Man's best friend", would have stood on the mantelpiece above the fire in the Victorian cottage home, their familiar, friendly and comforting presence giving rise to the habit of describing them as "Comforters".
