This is a beautiful pair of oil on canvas paintings of the view of the Grand Canal in Venice by the renowned British artist Alfred Pollentine (1836-1890), each is signed lower right "A Pollentine" and are circa 1870 in date.

This beautiful pair of paintings capture striking views of the Grand Canal and both feature busy streets and canal scenes with sailing boats and gondoliers in the foreground, in the distance the facades of Santa Maria dellaSalute to one and the spiralling tower of the San Marco Campanile to the other.Each housed in it's original and beautiful gilt gallery frame.Several examples of his work have sold at top auction houses, see Christies, Sothebys and Bonhams

Alfred Pollentineis best known as an accomplished painter of Venetian scenes, although he also did paint some English coastal views. Many of his paintings were done in an impressionistic style.
Pollentine exhibited numerous works at several of the top galleries in England from 1861 through 1880, including two of London's most prestigious ones, the British Institution and Society of British Artists.
R. J. Pollentine and W. H. Pollentine are also recorded artists and are believed to be his father and brother.
