Antique Painting on Cloth of the Buddha With Devotees

Mid 20th century

This was painted in northern Thailand. A painting such as this is likely meant to be a devotional offering to make merit, or thamboon.

The enlightened Buddha is shown sitting and surrounded by devotees. One observes from a tree. Female attendants flank him on either side. There is gold gilt on the Buddha.

The Buddha is depicted in the bhumisparsa mudra or earth witnessing posture. It was in this posture that the Buddha touched the ground with his right hand to call the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his awakening or enlightenment.
