Henry Earp was head of a famous family of Brighton artists. He worked predominantly in watercolour, but occasionally in oil and he is best known for his paintings, like this one, dated 1889, of cattle in the landscape. He exhibited widely at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Society of British Artists, Walker Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. Earp is a well-collected artist and his work is represented in many important collections including the Herbert Art Gallery and Brighton & Hove Galleries.

As well is being head of a dynasty of painters, Henry was cousin to the famous US Marshall Wyatt Earp.
