Wilhelm Richard Wagner (Leipzig, May 22, 1813 - Venice, February 13, 1883) was a German composer, poet, librettist, theater director, conductor and essayist.

he is recognized as one of the most important musicians of all eras, especially romanticism. Wagner is best known for his reform of the musical theater. Unlike most other opera composers, self-taught Wagner has always written the libretto and the script for his works himself. Wagner's compositions, in particular those of his last period, are relevant for their counterpoint texture, their rich chromaticity, their harmonies, their orchestration and for the use of the Leitmotiv technique: musical themes associated with people, places or places. feelings, and was also the main precursor of modern musical language: Tristan's exasperated chromaticism will in fact have a fundamental effect in the development of classical music. He transforms musical thought through his idea of ??the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work), synthesis of the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts. This concept finds its realization at the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, the theater he built for the performance of his plays, where the Bayreuth Festival still takes place, entirely dedicated to the composer from Leipzig.

His revolutionary art, on which there are, from the point of view of the booklets, influences from the tradition of Nordic, Germanic and chivalrous poems, as well as from the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, and from the musical point of view influences from all the history of classical music, triggered conflicting reactions in the artistic world and divided critics and enthusiasts into "Wagnerians" and "antiwagnerians" (among these, famous names such as Brahms or Robert and Clara Schumann) : it is also for this reason that the composer only had success in the last years of his life.
