Large Victorian excellent quality and unusual Gothic style pitch pine chest of five graduated drawers. The chest has stamped on the top edge of each drawer "Robson & Sons Cabinet Makers Newcastle upon Tyne". Robson and Sons were cabinet makers of the highest standards; they were originally based in a small house at 42 Northumberland Street in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Robert Robson started the business in the William IV period of 1835 after serving his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and upholsterer. The drawers are pine lined and the interior has been covered in blue sugar paper. The drawers have a very attractive grain and chased and gilded brass swing handles. The chest top has a high sided gallery, shaped at the sides and domed and carved to the centre of the back. The figured grain of the pitch pine is very attractive the chest having solid gable ends and a broad high plinth base. The chest is very well made and good quality with a large storage capacity in the five drawers which slide freely. The polished top is 130cm from the ground.
