Antique Japanese antique perfume koro - Famille Verte - c1800s

    Overview:
This is a rare and unusual fine Famille Verte Japanese lidded perfume koro - it was used to hold perfume. It is hand painted with landscapes and dates from the 19th century. This interesting fan shaped koro stands raised on four small feet and is painted to two sides with a building set within a water mountainous landscape within a yellow ground, with a pattern design painted in blue and red around the body. The shaped cover sits flush within a recess to the top and is applied with a gourd shaped finial. The lid has several star shaped cut-outs. The koro is not marked. There is a growing interest in Chinese artifacts resulting in rising prices, making the koro an excellent longterm financial investment.

I took the koro to the Oriental department of Bonhams, London and they gave an auction valuation of £1,000 -1,500, making my price a good investment. However, they said it could make much more, depending on bidding factors. Auction values of Oriental antiquities are notoriously difficult to gauge at present, due to the volatility of the market. Stephen Loakes, head of the Sothebys Oriental department, tells me that they are placing auction ‘valuations’ of £10,000 on Oriental items and seeing them make £100,000 at auction. I'm selling at a lower price than I might make at auction simply because the auction process takes a long time.

The koro is in excellent original condition, with no restoration. There is a small area of loss to the inside rim within the recess for the lid but this certainly is of little consequence and may even be in the making.

    Age: c1800s
    Size: 9.5cm high x 11.5cm wide

A beautiful, rare piece of Japanese antiquity that will be much admired; it will provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to enjoy. Feel free to return the koro for a refund if you are not entirely happy, as long as the koro is returned in the same condition.
