Monteiths are of a similar design to punch bowls. They were conceived in Englandas a ‘variation on a theme'. Allegedly they were designed by a gentleman calledMonteith, who was renowned for wearing a scalloped coat.
Monteiths were originally made with a shaped or notched upper rim, (of similardesign to their namesake's coat). This emarginated rim allowed a punch ladle, tall glasses and a lemon strainer to be held by the bowl. Later this became aremovable 'crown', allowing the bowl to be used as a punch bowl.
