Mounted, Gilt-Framed & Glazed Original Signed 1920s Watercolour of Rural Scene with Sheep by a River by George Oyston (Brit. c1860-1937)

George Oyston was a talented and prolific professional artist who was born in North Shields, the son of an engineer. He painted in both oil and watercolour and specialised in landscapes, river scenes and genre subjects. However, he is best known for his soft-focussed watercolours, such as the present work, of isolated rural scenes around the River Thames in Surrey and in Hampshire. He exhibited many works at the Berwick Club in Newcastle until he moved to London in 1891. He moved to Walton-on-Thames and by 1897 he was living at Shepperton. During those years he exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Society of British Artists.

    Height of Frame 43cm x Width 71.5cm (17" x 28.25")
    Height of Picture within Mount 22.25cm x Width 51.75cm (8.75" x 20.5")
    Frame Thickness 2.25cm (0.9")

Although this painting is probably from the 1920s, the frame is much more recent and, aside from minor damage in the form of small scrapes & chips to the LHS of the frame, picture, mount, frame & glass are all in very good, clean & sound condition.

NB: Please bear in mind that the photographs were taken in poor lighting conditions and include some inevitable reflections in the glass; I shall try to take some better pictures in due course.
