Large Georgian campaign style mahogany writing box in fine condition. Excellent unspoilt patina. No shrinkage splits or uneven light bleaching to mar the exterior appearance. Inlaid brass corner pieces, straps and edging to the entire lid are all original and firmly fixed. Original inlaid side handles and cartouche. Side drawer accessed by removing the original brass locking rod located to the box interior; a working key is provided. The top closes perfectly square. Both sections of the writing platform are original. The material is free of tears across all fold lines therefore ensuring that the two ‘flaps’ remain in position when accessing the storage areas beneath and when opening the lid. Hinges and lock in very good condition. The office section comprises of twin inkwell sections with a matching pair of replacement brass screw top inkpots in excellent condition, twin wafer slopes and a removable dished pen tray with storage space beneath. As is very often the case the base board of the storage area nearest to the office section is split. A box of this period and quality does of course feature secret drawers accessed by pressing one of the carcass sides (the location will be clearly highlighted to the buyer). A concealing panel opens to reveal the three original drawers, all in fine condition. An impressive piece of Georgian woodenware that will I am sure command attention in any setting.
