Exceptionally fine early George III mahogany bookcase. This china display case is in the tradition of a group of elaborate cabinets of circa 1765, all of upright form and, as with this cabinet, incorporating a chest of drawers on tall square legs, but with fret-carved superstructures. One such was supplied by William Vile to Queen Charlotte in 1761 while another was in the collection of Robert D’Arcy, 4th Earl of Holderness (d1778) at Hornby Castle, Yorkshire.
