Circa 1800, rare large sized pine and carved gesso mantelpiece made in Edinburgh. The narrow flat top has a slight break front section at each end. There are various mouldings on top with different styles of gesso. Below this in the centre there is a raised panel which is the piece-de-résistance. It has a profusely carved gesso section with swags and tails, ribbons and vines hanging from it. In the centre there is a small nest with 3 birds, and an English rose and Scottish thistles. Above this there are 2 birds in flight with grapes in their mouth. On each side of this again there are 2 further sections with carved swags and tails with vines and grapes, and in the centre above this there is another basket of flowers and grapes. The thistles and roses repeat again at the top of the pilasters both left and right, above carved acanthus leaves which continue around the sides. Down the front there are carved gesso vines with leaves and grapes continuing down. At the base there is a block and a raised section. The whole fireplace has wonderful colour and excellent patination and has superb gesso work.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
