I am pleased to offer this wonderfully exuberant pair of early 20th century vases painted by Spode's Artistic Director Thomas Hassall. I checked the meaning of exuberant before using that particular adjective and it reads "full of energy, excitement and cheerfulness. That certainly describes these vases! They date to around 1910 - 1920 and are simply smothered in a multitude of flowers of all types on a gilt background. Completely over the top and highly decorative, they will certainly brighten a gloomy corner.

Sadly they haven't escaped time unscathed and one of the vases has been broken below the handles and well repaired with some overpainting evident. The paint has been well matched for colour and with so much decoration the repair isn't particularly noticeable. The other vase has a hairline to the body of the vase which is visible to the interior. There is also some old internal damage to the bottom of the vase where it meets the foot with a screw mechanism. There is a piece broken off inside but this doesn't affect the outward appearance although there is a little movement where the foot joins the body of the vase. The vases measure 25cm tall by 14cm across the widest area of the body. Both vases are signed T Hassall to the lower right hand side
