    Contemporary full green polished calf with double gilt fillet to boards, profusely floral gilt spines in compartments separated by both decorative raised and flat gilt banding, double crimson morocco title labels; marbled edges; 8vo.
    First Edition. With eleven chromolithographic plates of which seven are coloured and four tinted; eight black and white plates and one folding map, hand-coloured in outline.
    A fine copy of this highly important account of the American west and Indian life.
    Mollhausen accompanied the Whipple Expedition as the party's naturalist and artist. The expedition explored and surveyed a route for a prospective railroad along the 35th parallel from the Mississippi to the Pacific. The beautiful map illustrates the route of the expedition from Fort Smith, Arkansas through the Indian territories in the southwest to California.
