Mollhausen accompanied the Whipple Expedition as the party's naturalist and artist. The expedition explored and surveyed a route for a prospective railroad along the 35th parallel from the Mississippi to the Pacific. The beautiful map illustrates the route of the expedition from Fort Smith, Arkansas through the Indian territories in the southwest to California.
