Circa 1880, Continental carved walnut knee hole desk. The rectangular shaped solid walnut top has ink stains and old repairs but wonderful colour and patination. The fore edge of the desk is carved on all sides. At the front there is a configuration of 1 narrow long drawer and left and right a bank of 4 further graduating drawers, all with raised fielded panels and stylish small cast brass and plated tear drop handles. Either side of the drawers there are recessed pilasters. Beneath the bottom drawer there is a large flared section with foliate carving which continues round all the sides and into the knee section. The gables have a large fielded panel and foliate carving with a large flower head at the top and the bottom. There are large steel lifting handles which are held in place by a simple rustic back plate. A very unusual and stylish feature of this desk is the back of it, which is profusely carved and has a faux stylish escutcheon giving the impression that it is a closed blanket box. On the top there is a full length carved panel depicting a hunting scene and beneath this there is a massive panel depicting a scene with ladies and gents, castles and foliate carving. Left and right there are 2 carved pilasters with figures and carved acanthus leaves. The whole piece stands on 4 elegant, tall, carved bun feet at the front and 2 at the back.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
