Antique Burmese Book of Fortune Telling Folios

Burmese, probably from Shan States. A treatise on fortunetelling and astrology which reflects magical religious systems of the Tai people of the Shan States of Burma and Lan Na (northern Thailand).

There are many illustrations of people, animals, monks, demons in various postures which give information for the person who will randomly choose a page.

The Shan and Lan Na people are Theravada Buddhists and include aspects of Hinduism and spirit religion. People visit experts called sala and some Buddhist monks, who can interpret the symbols and perform rituals. They need to know the birth date of the client.

This text covers spells, practices and incantations to create harmony in personal relations, protection and good luck. Animals are present as their physical and mental characteristics may be transferred to humans.

This is a rare item.

25 folio pages with watercolor paintings on each side (except for one page with a single painting).

A rare item (this is the only one I have seen and I purchased it in 2003).
