A mid 19th century French bois durci medallion of Guiseppe Garibaldi. Bois Durci was used as an ebony or hard wood substitute and was made from hard wood sawdust mixed with animal blood that was heated and compressed in a mould. The medallion has the word "Guiseppe Garibaldi, Guerra D'italia 1859" moulded around the edge. Garibaldi was an Italian general, patriot, revolutionary and republican. He is considered one of the greatest generals of modern times and is considered by the twentieth-century historiography and popular culture as Italy's greatest national hero. The medallion is in very good condition. (Circa 1859) Diameter 11.3cm (4.4 inches) Bois Durci Medallion of Guiseppe Garibaldi
