Antique Antique pottery Plate by Brameld - Returning Woodman B&W Transferware C.1820

Antique pottery Plate by Brameld - Returning Woodman B&W Transferware C.1820

A charming antique pottery blue and white transferware Plate by Brameld of hexagonal shape in the Returning Woodman / Woodman / Peasant - stamped makers marks - from the Elcombe Collection, item number 26

Printed in blue with a scene of a woodman returning to his thatched cottage and being greeted by a little girl and her dog. A woman is seated at a spinning wheel outside the cottage, the whole scene framed by plants and trees while the sun's rays shine through clouds. The narrow printed border gives the impression of scrolled gadrooning. A fine rippled glaze and shallow rounded foot rim. Impressed 'BRAMELD' in a floral cartouche.

Made by Brameld and Co. of Swinton, Yorkshire, this fascinating rustic scene is known as 'The Returning Woodman' or 'Woodman' pattern, but 'Peasant' was the original name used by the factory. Printed in dark blue with a scene of a woodman returning to his thatched cottage, being greeted by his daughter and her dog while his wife sits at a spinning wheel outside the cottage. Unusual and very distinctive octagonal shapes were used for most pieces.
