This is a fantastic antique French giltwood Louis Revival four piece salon suite comprising a pair of armchairs and a pair of side chairs, circa 1860 in date.

They have been expertly carved and gilded, decorated with acanthus, florals, scrolls and rocaille carved frames and are riased on beautiful cabriole legs.They have been reupholstered in a sumptuous lemon silk and there is no mistaking the beautiful and stylish design, which is certain to make this suite a treasured addition to one room in your home.Condition:In excellent condition having been beautifully restored and reupholstered with lemon-coloured silk in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.

The gilt gesso technique appeared in England at the end of the seventeenth century with the work of Jean Pelletier, a Huguenot craftsman who received royal patronage at Hampton Court and Kensington Palace. James Moore, a royal cabinetmaker working in the early eighteenth century, expanded on this technique with increased drama and exaggeration to the carving. Throughout the Georgian era in the eighteenth century, gilded furniture was highly prized as some of the finest furniture available as it emulated the ever popular taste for French style and décor.
