A good Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Blue and White Transfer Indented Pottery Hot-Water Plate, { Spode Shape No. S131 }, potted by Spode's successors, Copeland & Garrett { 1833 - 1847 }, at their Spode Works, Stoke, Staffordshire. Printed in a light blue palette with the "Girl at the Well" pattern, formerly known as "The Font", believed to have first been introduced by Spode in the early 1820's, the underside with underglaze blue printed Maker's mark together with the impressed Maker's mark COPELAND & GARRETT. Hot-Water plates were designed to keep an invalid's food warm whilst enjoying a meal, and can be found, although with some difficulty today, decorated in a variety of Spode patterns.
