Antique A Leaf from L’Histoire Du Vieux Et Du Nouveau Testament By Nicholas Fontaine (Pseudonymn: Sieur de Royaumont)

    France
    1702
    20 x 27 cm

Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709) was a French theologian, translator and poet. He composed the History of the Old and New Testament with the help of his friend Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy while the two were imprisoned in the Bastille. He was arrested for heresy and wrote this book while imprisoned.

This leaf is about the story of Joseph, now a high official in Egypt. He had been sold into slavery by his brothers. In this leaf, the brothers are before him. Joseph knows who they are but they do not recognize him as their brother. Joseph questions them and decides to put them in jail, but only for three days. ure has not been widely accepted by scholars. This decision to imprison them has been interpreted as Joseph taking the time to determine if they regretted what they had done and if they had changed.

It ends with reconciliation so it is a commentary on forgiveness. This story appears in Genesis.
