Antique A Leaf from L’Histoire Du Vieux Et Du Nouveau Testament By Nicholas Fontaine (Pseudonymn:Sieur de Royaumont)

Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709) was a French theologian, translator and poet. He composed the History of the Old and New Testament with the help of his friend Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy while the two were imprisoned in the Bastille. He was arrested for heresy and wrote this book while imprisoned.

This leaf refers to a story in Second Kings. The Israelites were burying a man. Suddenly they saw a band of raiders so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. This was a miracle on one of ten ressurections recorded in the Bible. This miracle was a foreshadowing of how Christ's death and resurrection turned the grave into the passageway to new life.
