An important Victorian red morocco leather despatch box of very large proportions; the chamfered top gold tooled with the British royal coat of arms, flanked by the V.R royal insignias of Queen Victoria beneath her crown.
The front and rear of the box are decorated with a triptych consisting of two V.R insignias and a central diamond-shaped design.
The two sides also feature the V.R insignia and are mounted with bronze swing handles.
All the surfaces are framed with multiple foliate and floral tooled borders.
The box is fitted with a Bramah patent lock, stamped S. Mordan & Co. Patent, Warranted, and it retains its original key.
The green leather lined interior has raised sides and a foliate design decorating the inner rim. There is a lattice work of ribbon inside the lid
This is by far the largest and most impressive despatch box I have seen in the forty years I have been buying & selling Royal and Parliamentary boxes. The fact that this one is decorated with the royal coat of arms, and has royal insignias in eight locations would suggest that it was a box of significant importance in the inventory of a royal household, most likely that of Queen Victoria herself. It is in particularly fine condition, commensurate with its age.
