19thC French Gilt & Carved Beechwood Bergere Armchair with Later Upholstery

A wonderful 19thC French piece, in very good condition, with dark giltwood & elaborately carved frame throughout, the wings & head with floral scrolls, bud & leaf and a crowning gourd, the hand-rests & hips with acanthus leaf, the skirt with leaf & berries, on 4 circular & tapering turned & fluted legs, upholstered throughout in a blue regency striped Sanderson fabric having, as an embossed motif, a sprig of leaves and with closely spaced brass dome-headed fittings, over-sprung and with a large, loose cushion, this great bergere chair is both immensely attractive and eminently practical and will impress in any elegantly appointed home, whether period-furnished or more contemporary in style, fully-deserving of the admiring attention it will undoubtedly inspire.

    O/All Width at the Wings 73cm x Depth 75cm (28.75" x 29.5"), Height at Centre of Back 98.5cm (38.75"), Height to Seat Frame 40.5cm (16") & Height to Top of Cushion 52.5cm (20.75")
    Seat Width 57.5cm (22.75") & Seat Depth 53.5cm (21")

This is a 19thC chair with later upholstery, so you may expect some wear & tear to the frame commensurate with considerable age and including fashionably 'shabby' flaking of the gilt paintwork but, actually, having been re-upholstered in the relatively recent past, it's in very good, clean & sound condition for the age of the chair and it's ready to use in your home.

NB: A Bergere is a long-seated upholstered armchair or one with caned seat, back & sides and with loose cushions, especially of an 18thC French style, from the French for shepherdess.
