A terrific little apprentice made miniature mahogany veneered bureau desk, with three graduated drawers, probably made in the first half of the 19th century.

The fold down front has been veneered in flamed mahogany with cross-banding and metal stringing between the two. It has a tiny diamond shaped boxwood, false escutcheon which matches the escutcheons in each of the three drawers. There are two pull out supports which were to support the front section when folded down but it has a slight age related bow in it and doesn't quite sit flat. I personally think this adds to the charm of it: The bureau has been made quite naively, but the apprentice who made it to show off his skills to his master, has certainly exhibited quite a degree of expertise in its execution! Within the top, there is a gallery containing tree tiny drawers, each with a dovetail joint to the back, and each has a tiny little mahogany turned knob. Each of the drawers to the front, again have dovetail joints to their backs and they have ebony beading around their outer edges. The base has been finished off with a shaped skirt to the front and sides.

The miniature bureau was in a bit of a sorry state when I acquired it, but all the original parts were present and so I have painstakingly restored it to its former glory, in fact it has more of a charm to it now because it has survived for such a long time and now has lovely patination.

Measurements: Just under 24 cm wide, 14 cm deep and 24 cm high.
