A George V Red Morocco Leather Despatch Box belonging to Sir William Jowitt K.C.M.P*. at the time he held the office of Attorney General from 1929 to 1932. Later he became Solicitor General, Paymaster General, then Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He was elevated to the peerage in 1946 and became Leader of the Labour Party in the House of Lords in 1952. Please see below for further details.
The box with central inset handle in the the bevelled top, bears the royal insignia of George V and is stamped with Sir William Jowitt's name and his office of H.M. Attorney General. It is in overall good condition, although having been forced open at one time. The lock Stamped Bramah London, has been fully restored, and a key made to match the original. The black leather cloth interior has raised sides and stabilising studs with diamond pattern trellis work inside the lid. The maker's name , John Peck & Son, Mnfrs.to HM Stationery Office is stamped on either side of the lock.
