      LARGE CARVED WOODEN BOOK KNIFE WITH VOIVODA. P.I. SOMOV 1918. Made in the breathtaking spirit of Russian Art Nouveau and conveys the appearance of a thoughtful, daring governor. It is presented almost sculpturally, in three-quarters, with perky cowlicks on the hero’s helmet. The level of plastic work and artistic generalizations betray the hand of a skilled carver, if not a sculptor. Perhaps this is an abbreviation for an artel of carvers or a workshop. Obverse: in the center is a portrait of Empress Catherine II, facing to the right, in the edge of the shoulder are the initials of the mintmaster “TI” (Timofey Ivanov), below it is the designation of the St. Petersburg Mint “SPB”, at the top from left to right along the edge is the inscription “B.M. EKATERINA. II.IM.ISAMOD.ALL-RUSSIAN (By the grace of God, Catherine II Empress and Autocrat of All Russia). Reverse: in the central circle there is a simplified image of the Coat of Arms of the Russian Empire - a double-headed eagle with a scepter and an orb. Around there are four large cartouches with images: the coat of arms of the Astrakhan kingdom on the left, the Moscow coat of arms at the top, the coat of arms of the Siberian kingdom at the bottom, the coat of arms of the Kazan kingdom on the right.
