Sweetheart brooches were produced in many designs, for the wives and sweethearts of those serving in the armed forces. I have had a number of submarine brooches in the past, but this is the first I have seen for many years. it is also unusual in being 15ct as the majority of them were 9ct, for the widest affordability for not-very-well paid service-men. This model is stamped with the design registry number 643143 showing the design was entered in 1916, the approximate date of this brooch. The registry was created in the 19th century to stop the copying of designs, alongside patents which were to stop the copying of manufacturing processes and designs. All these designs are now kept in the Public Records Office in Kew. The sub is 2 inches: 50 mm long
