Circa 1910, fantastic exhibition quality mahogany and walnut pedestal desk by Whytock & Reid of Edinburgh. The top is concave in shape, has two matching flame walnut panels on each side, and an unusual feature in the centre of a leather top laid out as a chess board. The centre drawer is concave with very stylish handles and profusely carved with a foliate design. The drawers on either side of this are ribbed and beneath these are three further drawers. The drawer liners are all solid mahogany. There are four pilasters on the desk front with the outer ones hinged in the form of a Wellington chest locking device. Beneath the drawers is a simple shaped apron and the whole piece stands on block feet with carved acanthus leaves. On the back on one side the panel is hinged and opens to reveal a shelved cupboard. The back of the desk is polished and has similar style to the front. The whole desk is crossbanded and the gables and inside of the pedestals have similar matching veneers to the top. The piece has probably been commissioned as it is so unusual in style.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
