The Widows Mite. (Sir William Fettes-Douglas)
Sir William Fettes-Douglas (scottish 1822-1891)
Oil on canvas 26" x 36"
Signed & Dated WF Douglas 1851.
A simply superb painting which was exhibited in the RSA in 1851. The subject matter was based on the parable of the poor but charitable widow, who donates more, than those of a wealthier disposition. However it could be read that she is feeling she has to "appear to donate" in order to keep up appearances, a pressure often forced upon members of the Victorian society.
Sir William Fettes-Douglas's work is highly acclaimed & sought and this picture would be an excellent addition to any collection.
