Primitive 18th century west country sycamore flax break used in the linen-making process
A rare example of a primitive West Country flax break. This would have been used in the processing of flax to make linen thread. The top part of the device lifts up and down to break the flax whilst the individual sits on the bench. There are a few of these examples left in museums and private collections but it extremely rare to find one with a built-in bench. Made from sycamore. A very good and rare piece. Measuring: Seat - 94cm long, lifting arm 70cm long, height to top of handle - 69cm, height to centre of seat 34cm West country, late 18th century
