This is an absolutely charming example of a 19th century seaman's chest with iron loop handles, original hinges and painted decoration to the inside of the lid. The outside retains much of its original painted finish. The chest is made using dovetail joints and is wider at the top than the bottom for added stability when at sea. These are quite unusual pieces that do not come up for sale very often. It has its original base boards and traces of painted geometric design of the front and ends.
It is not possible to say definitively what wood has been used as the chest if painted inside and out. It is a heavy piece.
