An Italian Rapier, Circa 1640. With slender 46 inch blade of flattened diamond section, stamped with a bladesmith’s mark at the ricasso, gilt steel hilt of rounded bars comprising a pair of straight quillons with bud-shaped finials, finely cut with a scrolled pattern, knuckle-guard with recurved finial en suite with quillon terminals, a pair of ring-guards with pierced circular design, multi-bar outer guar with three bars joining the knuckle-guard, ovoid pommel cut with a matching scrolled foliate design, gilt wire bound grip with ‘Turks’ heads’.
